Message from the Head of School
Education is not filling a pail but the lighting of a fire
William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)
Greetings and welcome to STEVENSON.
I arrived at Stevenson after a long academic career in child psychiatry/psychology, both at Boston University and Columbia University/NewYork Presbyterian Medical Center. My work over the past thirty-five years has been almost exclusively with adolescents who, for one reason or another, have “…lost their way…” while traversing this often difficult developmental phase of life. While my primary focus has been clinically oriented, it also interfaced with private and public schools’ administration, educational, and clinical staffs.
Since coming to STEVENSON in July, I have had the opportunity to spend time with and observe our faculty, and have found them to be a highly diverse group of individuals who share a common dedication to the mission of the school. They are versed not only in their educational specialties, but also in the various nuances of adolescent development that can impact a student’s ability to perform at their highest level.
As the new Head of School, I am extremely excited to continue to execute the STEVENSON mission. For the past fifty years, STEVENSON has excelled at taking students who have had their “…fire for learning…” dampened and reigniting it within this safe and secure environment. The educational approach at STEVENSON is comprehensive; we take into account not only the academic needs of the students, but also the social and emotional factors that often weigh heavily as they navigate an often arduous stage of their life.
As we enter into our 50th year of being a premier alternative college preparatory high school, I look forward to being a part of the kind of community that is dedicated to relighting the fire within our students. Over the course of the year, I will be providing periodic updates on some of our new initiatives. For those in our STEVENSON community, please feel free to contact me with any comments or questions. For those of you who want to learn more about our program, I encourage you to set up a time to meet with the STEVENSON staff and me, and see our mission at work.
