Meet Andy's and Jacob's Hacker Zombie Robot, a nightmare of a creation that takes over the world (or at least the other robots in the vicinity.) It searches out other robots, then zaps them with an infrared viral program that infects the target robot with a similar program that forces the target robot to search out other robots so that it too can infect them with the same viral program. With any 'luck,' within minutes there will be a room full of maniacal zombie robots.
At first appearance, it may seem that students are simply playing around with Legos. If you look closer though you will see students developing engineering skills that allow them to design and build robots with specialized sensors, machine parts and motors. Also you will find students programming the brains of their robot (a microprocessor which is basically a mini-computer) so that the robot can take in sensory input and react in a complex manner.
In the past, students have built and programmed many kinds of robots. Some examples are a mobile golfbot, soccerbot, slot machine, firefighter, scanner, printer, music reader and player, a trebuchet; as well as many intelligent automated vehicles, including tanks, cars, a dog sled complete with sled dog robots, and a machine gun vehicle.
