When it comes to planning for college and other postsecondary programs, Stevenson serves students through a focused team of professionals surrounded by layers of support. Stevenson’s College Team includes our College Counselor, College Coordinator, Senior Seminar Teacher, and Senior Advisor. All seniors work with our College Counselor and College Coordinator and then start their Senior Seminar course, which further informs essay writing for college applications. In addition, one of our Senior Advisors brings with her several years of success as a college counselor.

Our goal is to help each student advance to a school that will continue to meet personal, academic, and social-emotional needs. The College Counselor and College Coordinator are resources for students and families as they consider postsecondary options. Their direct work with students typically begins in 11th grade and then includes periodic individual and small group meetings with students and families afterwards. Further, Stevenson offers optional College Fridays for seniors, giving them the opportunity to stay after school and focus on college application work with guidance and support.

The College Team’s work aims for a list of specific colleges or universities that may best meet the student’s needs. A list of schools that represent a range of options that would be appropriate for the student is developed in conjunction with each student and family. These schools become the focus of Stevenson’s efforts on behalf of the student. Families are, of course, free to pursue additional schools as well, but the emphasis of the College Counselor’s work will be on the mutually agreed upon schools.

The College Counselor’s goal is for students to take ultimate responsibility for following clear schedule guidelines and completing the application process, including completing testing requirements, writing and editing required essays, preparing and scheduling visits and interviews, and securing letters of recommendation from faculty and others. In this way, students achieve a sense of ownership of the process and accomplishment when they finish. They are also better prepared for college where they must take on greater self-responsibility and self-advocacy. Stevenson also maintains direct communication with colleges. We invite representatives to campus, and our College Counselor regularly visits schools. Combined with the robust insight from faculty and staff, these external professional relationships allow us to advocate for our students and to provide current, first-hand information to families.
