Service Learning: Juniors Volunteer at City Harvest

Here at Stevenson, our journey towards college preparedness begins far ahead of graduation, and our Stevenson STACC℠ informs how we integrate this into our programming. For example, all Stevenson juniors attend a support group called Junior Group once a week which is designed to start conversations about life after high school, facilitate ways for students to discover and highlight their strengths, and become a cohesive Class of 2028.

This week, our Juniors took that work beyond the classroom as they headed out on a community service field trip to City Harvest on Tuesday. At City Harvest, students worked together to repack food from bulk containers into family-sized portions that can be more easily distributed through community food programs across New York City.

This experience is a meaningful extension of the Stevenson STACC℠, our framework for college readiness guided by integrated academic and emotional growth. Through service learning, students have the opportunity to practice key STACC℠ growth priorities: supporting themselves and others, adapting to new situations, communicating effectively, and connecting with their community and the broader world.

In Junior Group, students are building the readiness that will support them beyond Stevenson by putting these skills into action. Thanks to City Harvest for welcoming our juniors and creating this meaningful opportunity for our students to learn, volunteer, and grow together.
